Uneasy Listening: Dirty Beaches

I spent a lot of my time the last couple of days listening to the album Badlands by Dirty Beaches and have been completely blown away by it. This is music that actually does justice to the COOL tag.

Alex Zhang Hungtai, born in Taiwan and now residing in Canada, is the man behind Dirty Beaches. His work (especially on Badlands) has a distinct bleak, almost noir quality to it that harks back to another era. Alex has mentioned that the music on Badlands has been inspired by some of David Lynchs’ films.

The songs on the album are a blend of Lo Fi, retro rock n roll and experimental rock and would be perfect as a soundtrack for a Tarantino western or as background music for a drug induced stupor. Pretty, easy listening music this is not but then that should be clear from the post title. What it is is a challenging but ultimately rewarding listen.

Check out a few of my favourite songs from the album i.e. Sweet 17, Lord Knows Best (with that hypnotic piano riff) and Horses and if you like what you hear check out the rest of Badlands on Bandcamp here.
