I know the output on the blog has really dropped off in the last month of 2013 but I’m hopeful that things will improve in 2014.

Anyway here’s the first of my year-end lists of 2013; featuring my favourite songs from the year gone by (all 60+ of them). The list is broadly arranged in ascending order of frequency with which I listened to these songs over the course of 2013.

Some of the songs are not available on Soundcloud but between Youtube and it I think I’ve got the entire list covered (check list out below the Soundcloud playlist). Give it a listen and hopefully you should find plenty that you like :).

Here is my annual list of ladies who are creating some of the most awesome pop music at the moment and whose music I expect to reach out to larger audiences in 2013. The list features two artists each from the US and the UK and one each from Australia and Sweden.

I would have loved to include Jessie Ware on this list since she missed out last year but frankly she is quite famous already and doesn’t need any help from me :). Check out my list of 6 Female Singers To Watch In 2013 below and let me know your suggestions on additions to this list.

INDIANA

Indiana_female singer to watch 2013

The force is really strong with this one.

Indiana is a devilishly talented singer from Nottingham, UK who comes across as a mix of emerging young singers like Delilah & Ellie Goulding but with the maturity (vocally speaking) of a Sarah McLachlan.

Her pristine, beautiful voice has a haunting, arresting quality that sucks you in and the minimal electronic production on her songs just amplifies that impact of her vocals (just dig into her cover of Frank Ocean’s Swim Good).

Indiana’s been releasing songs steadily over the last few months and I’m hoping that an album release is on the cards sometime this year.

EMMA LOUISE

Emma Louise_female singer to watch 2013

Emma Louise is a 21-year-old Brisbane based folk pop singer-songwriter who first garnered attention in Australia with the release of her 2011 debut EP Full Hearts & Empty Rooms.

What marks Emma out as a special prospect is that like say Ben Howard, not only is she a gifted musician and songwriter but she also possesses an earthy genuineness that has and will have people rooting for her. Emma Louise signed to Frenchkiss Records in 2012 and will release her debut album on March 22.

Check out some of her music below and head to her Youtube channel to listen to tons of her earlier stuff.

SKY FERREIRA

Sky Tonia Ferreira is a 20 year old multifaceted (singer/model/actor) performer from Los Angeles, California. Sky hit her stride late last year with the release of her Ghost EP which contained stellar pop songs like Everything Is Embarrassing and Lost In My Bedroom.

Her debut album I’m Not Alright should get released this year and if carries on from her EP it should be worth checking out.

CHLOE HOWL

Chloe Howl_Female singer to watch 2013

At 17 years of age, British singer Chloe Howl is the youngest lady on this list. Though she’s only a couple of songs into her career, those songs happen to be brilliantly produced dance pop songs with oodles of attitude and have earned her comparisons to the likes of Lily Allen. Not bad huh!

FAYE

Faye_female singer to watch 2013

FAYE (Fanny Hamlin) is a Swedish pop singer/songwriter who spent her early teens touring with the likes of N’sync & A-Teens as part of an all girl group named Play in the early noughties.

Having recovered from that experience, Faye ignited her solo career in 2012 with the release of a handful of stellar singles like Water Against The Rocks and Breathe Out that clearly showcased her ‘soaring, heart-wrenching vocals and irresistible pop hooks’.

No news on an album yet but Faye tours the US in March for SXSW so keep an eye out for her.

ANGEL HAZE

Angel Haze_female singer to watch 2013

American Raykeea Wilson better known as Angel Haze finished 3rd on BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll and is the only rapper on this list. Just 21 years old, it’s obvious that she’s been through a lot in her life and those experiences and the emotions linked with them come across in her lyrics and music.

There is a bristling angst and barely contained ferociousness in Angel Haze’s delivery that is simply arresting, just check out her take on Eminem’s Cleaning Out My Closet.

So what are your thoughts on this list? Who did you like the most? The least? If you liked any of what you heard do share this list with your friends.

NOMP: 13 Bands To Watch In 2013 http://newonmyplaylist.com/nomp-13-bands-to-watch-in-2013/ http://newonmyplaylist.com/nomp-13-bands-to-watch-in-2013/#comments Fri, 11 Jan 2013 19:03:24 +0000 http://newonmyplaylist.com/?p=4508 Continue reading ]]> nomp 2013 bands to watch

Here is my list of 13 bands that I ‘discovered’ and absolutely loved in 2012; and that I hope will reach out to wider audiences in 2013. Admittedly this years list is a lot more skewed towards US bands and garage/punk rock than last years list but I guess that’s how the cookie crumbled for me musically speaking in 2012.

The Orwells
The Orwells_Band to Watch 2013

From: Elmhurst, Illinois US
Links: Facebook | Youtube | Vimeo

This garage pop quintet of 17 year olds from the suburbs of Chicago not only has butt loads of talent but also displays maturity in terms of their sound, lyrics and attitude that belies their age.
When I first wrote about them in July 2012 I had mentioned that ‘The Orwells’ charm isn’t that what they do or how they sound is novel – their influences are pretty obvious and they don’t shy away from them – it’s that they manage to infuse their music with just enough of themselves and their teenage angst to make it distinct.
The band released Remember When (I believe their third album) in August 2012 and it was one of my favourite albums of the year gone by. Look to hear from new stuff from them in 2013

HAIM

HAIM_Band to Watch 2013

From: Los Angeles, California
Links: Website | Facebook | Youtube

HAIM is the band on this list that’s closest to making it big in 2013 (whatever that means) given their status as the recent winners of BBC Sound of 2013.

The three HAIM sisters along with drummer Dash Hutton (yes people do tend to forget him) combine elements of R&B with pop & alt rock to create an infectious, upbeat sound that is fresh and radio friendly.

Idles

From: Bristol, UK

This Bristol post punk quintet’s debut EP Welcome was my favourite EP of 2012. Welcome has remarkably slick and crisp production for a debut effort, the band sound incredibly tight with each song a showcase of dark, intense, delicious post punk.

Seriously go BUY Idles’ debut EP.

Natural Child

Natural Child_Band to Watch 2013
From: Nashville, Tennessee
Links: Website | Facebook | Bandcamp

These guys were one of my favourite finds of 2012 and I said earlier that ‘Natural Child is an exciting, buzzworthy trio from Nashville, Tennessee. Their music is a heady cocktail of classic psychedelic, garage and blues rock – all genres that I’m a big fan of. Sure, they may not bring anything new in terms of a sound to the table but Natural Child imbues their songs with a youthful energy and passion that makes them standout.

They were prolific in 2012 releasing two full length albums and I hope that level of prolificness continues in 2013 as well.

Heavy Beach

Heavy Beach_Band to Watch 2013

From: Melbourne, Australia
Links: Website | Facebook | Bandcamp

On their self titled debut EP (one of my favourite EPs of 2012 btw), the trio behind Heavy Beach create ‘Indie rock with shoegazey/post punk hues and come across as a groovier, more melodic, less abrasive even tamer (and I don’t mean that in a negative sense at all) avatar of Sonic Youth.
All three band members are part of other bands as well; I just pray they put most of their energies behind Heavy Beach because they do have something special going on here.

Rhye

Rhye_Band to watch 2013

From: Based in Los Angeles, California
Links: Website | Facebook | Youtube

Singer/producer Mike Milosh finally revealed to Pitchfork in Nov’12 that Rhye is a collaboration between him and Robin Hannibal who is a member of Danish electro soul band Quadron.

Rhye’s debut EP Open wowed us with its sensual soul pop reminding me of Sade at her best (back when like most people I thought that Rhye’s vocalist was a female). The duo plans to tour extensively from March onwards so do keep an eye out for them.

Tashaki Miyaki

Tashaki Miyaki_Band to Watch 2013
From: Los Angeles, California
Links: Facebook | Bandcamp

The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the fuzzy, shoegazey dream pop of Tashaki Miyaki is MAZZY STAR and in my book that’s a very good place to start.

The mysterious duo of Lucy and Rocky has expanded into a trio (bringing on a bass player, Dora) since I last covered them in August 2012 when their exquisite single Best Friend came out. Since then Tashaki Miyaki have released an album of cover songs titled Undercover (some of them are quite brilliant) but there’s no news so far on their debut full length.
